Post-Industrial Landscapes
As the solo capstone project for my Bachelor of Planning degree, this study explores strategies for revitalizing the Youngstown region, a former steel industry hub experiencing economic decline. The proposal is focused on asset-based development and repurposes underutilized brownfield sites to foster economic growth, community engagement, and environmental sustainability.
Project Goals & Vision:
Reactivation of Underutilized Land: Transform vacant industrial areas into mixed-use spaces, including offices, retail, urban farming, and public gathering areas.
Sustainable Infrastructure: Implement green infrastructure solutions like stormwater management systems and riverbank restoration.
Cultural & Economic Revitalization: Establish partnerships with local institutions to integrate educational spaces, performance venues, and professional hubs.
Mobility & Connectivity: Enhance walkability, bike accessibility, and public space integration to improve connectivity between downtown and surrounding neighborhoods.
Skills Learned:
Urban Planning & Asset-Based Development: Identified existing strengths and resources to create a sustainable redevelopment plan.
Site Analysis & Research: Conducted assessments on deteriorating infrastructure, brownfield conditions, and economic trends in post-industrial cities.
Sustainable Design & Environmental Planning: Proposed stormwater management, urban agriculture, and river restoration initiatives.
Community-Centered Development: Designed spaces to attract businesses, institutions, and community engagement.
Graphic Communication & Proposal Development: Created visual materials, reports, and planning documents to convey the redevelopment strategy effectively.
